Our current phase of remodeling project is all about interior design. Until now, I never really mentioned our fantastic interior designer Polina Zaika. Polina Zaika Design (musadesign.net) Polina is a Seattle-based designer. She offers full service design for commercial and residential clients. We are very lucky to have her as our designer.

There is a saying in Russian, "We are not that rich to buy cheap stuff" . This is very true. Home remodeling is an expensive project, and it's not something you will re-do next year if you don't like the result. If you don't like the result, most likely you will have to live with it for another 10 years or so.

Many people think that they don't need a designer and they can design their interiors themselves or copy a design from Houzz or any other magazine. Agree, it might work in some cases. But in most cases, this approach will not work. There are a lot of details that are omitted in these publications. If you watch reality shows about home remodeling and design, you probably know that what you see is only half of the story.

Good interior design is not just about a beautiful space. It's about functionality and quality of life. Your home should be comfortable, functional, ready for your lifestyle not only during COVID but in any other time as well.

I think interior designer is undervalued profession. Many people view it as an additional unnecessary expense. I disagree. I think hiring an interior designer is like making a good investment . Your return on investment will exceed your expectation.

Here's some benefits of hiring an interior designer for your remodeling project:
  1. your space will be beautiful AND functional

  2. you can save money on materials, furniture or avoid unnecessary expenses

  3. good design will increase the value of your home

  4. good design will improve the quality of life

  5. designer will help you to select a contractor for your project and will help you to manage the project

  6. You will not argue with your spouse. Perhaps I should move it to the top of my list :-)

Internet made a lot of information readily available and it seems like any of us can watch a YouTube video and become an expert. But it takes years to become a good and knowledgeable interior designer. Plus, from economic perspective, if you don't love design, don't have experience designing spaces, you will spend twice or three times more time designing your space than a professional designer. And if you don't like what you see after that, you might want to change everything that is changeable. This will lead to additional time and expense.

Here's an economic approach to decision making.

You spent 40 hours designing your room, you earn $40.00 an hour at your job. You bought $1000 worth of supplies and spent $500.00 on labor. After the project is finished you don't like the result.

(40 hr. x $40) +$1000 +$500 = $3,100 that you wasted + all the frustration that will come with that.

Design by Polina Zaika Design (musadesign.net). This project is not finished but I love how the room looks now.
